Trellis

Rather than fix the stained siding on the side of the house we decided to cover it up with vines. We built a trellis and have planted some vines we hope will grow up and cover it. The two on either end are honeysuckle and the one in the middle is a passion flower.

First Girl Zucchini Bud

Sure enough, the girl zucchini buds do look different from the boy buds. I was getting worried I didn't see any, but one little lady has decided to brave it with the fellas.

Bean Flower

Spotted my first flower on a bean plant today. It's a pretty little purple thing. I was thrilled to read online that beans don't need bees for pollination so I can leave it inside the screen cage for protection.

The zucchini plants have little buds on them. There are more tiny tomatoes appearing too.

Where Did That Come From?

I looked in my beans today and I discovered a half dozen caladium shoots coming up! I had a caladium last summer. After it died at the end of the summer I dug through the dirt looking for whatever might be left that I could see if I could save and resurrect this year, but I found nothing. I've got zucchini planted in that pot now. I guess at some point I must have used some of the old soil out of it in the pot I planted the beans in. That's the only way I can figure the caladium would suddenly reappear. Weird.

Flowers on the Tomatoes

Tomatoes are doing well and have developed flowers. I think due to the repotting, they started to lean a bit so we fashioned supports by bending metal hangers. The beans and the zucchini are also doing well.

Windy Day

Wind blew down my garden cage. I had it staked down with bent clothes hangers, which apparently was not sufficient, so Eric found some serious metal stakes and pounded them in.

Everything is growing well, including the second set of zucchini plants. No sign yet of the butternut squash. That's what is in the empty pots in the picture.
