Windy Day

Wind blew down my garden cage. I had it staked down with bent clothes hangers, which apparently was not sufficient, so Eric found some serious metal stakes and pounded them in.

Everything is growing well, including the second set of zucchini plants. No sign yet of the butternut squash. That's what is in the empty pots in the picture.

Expanded the Cage

Pulled the rest of the old window screens out of the garage and double the size of the garden cage today to make room for the newly planted beans and zucchini. It actually is going to work great I think. It won't be any match for the rouge deer we've seen in the neighborhood, but it should keep out the squirrels and rabbits.

Garden Cage Construction

We've got terrorist squirrels living in the several oak trees in the yard that dig up just about everything I plant, so I decided I'd better come up with something to protect the tomato plants. We had the windows in the house replaced last year and most of the old screens were still in the garage so I decided I'd use those to construct a cage of sorts. I say cage, since as I zip tied the screens together in the driveway, I closed myself inside, much to Eric's amusement. It basically looks like a phone booth. One of the neighbors from down the street stood at the end of her driveway, mail in hand, and watched me for several minutes without saying a word. I imagine it did look a bit curious. Hopefully it keeps the squirrels out though.
